Patricia registered as a midwife in 1987 and having worked for six months in Royal Maternity Hospital, she went to New York to work. On her return, she took up a post in Jubilee Maternity and worked there as a midwife and Labour ward sister until 1997. She also worked as a Supervisor of Midwives. In January 2002, she took up a post as a Lecturer within the University of Ulster.
