Dr Stockdales Presentation

Janine qualified as a midwife in 1985, and worked mainly in the NHS, with three years working in the USA. She has been studying part-time as a PhD student at the University of Ulster. Funded by The Research and Development Office of Northern Ireland, the aim of her five year research project was to apply a motivational instructional design model to routine breastfeeding instruction provided by midwives. In applying the model, the overall aim of the research was to develop and test a motivationally-enhanced version of instruction that would effectively promote and support breastfeeding. Preliminary work included the development of the Breastfeeding Motivational Instruction Measurement Tool designed to motivationally analyse the effects of current instruction. Based on the findings of the motivational analysis, a motivationally enhanced version of instruction, namely, “Designer Breastfeeding”, was developed and tested within a urban hospital and communities setting. The intervention has shown initial success and work continues in relation to further development and dissemination.

Further information on Janine's research is available in pdf format.
