Dr Briege Lagan

Briege was born in Northern Ireland. She qualified as Registered General Nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast in 1985 before undertaking midwifery training in Edinburgh. After qualifying in 1987 she worked as a midwife at the John Radcliff Hospital in Oxford for one year, before moving to work as a nurse/midwife in the USA. On returning to Northern Ireland late 1990, she took up a midwifery post at the Royal Maternity Hospital in Belfast. During her 10 years there she worked both in clinical midwifery practice and research, while completing a Diploma in Midwifery and Bachelor's of Science (Hons) in Nurse Management. While undertaking a Master's of Science in Health Promotion in 2002 she moved to the Causeway Coast where she worked as a community midwife before being employed as a Clinical Midwife Specialist within Causeway Maternity Services. In 2004 she was joint recipient of a RCM Professional Midwifery award under the category of ‘Leadership and Management’.

She has a special interest in appropriate use of technology in childbirth and information systems. In 2004 she became a recipient of a Department for Employment and Learning Scholarship, which permitted her to undertake a PhD full time at the University of Ulster where she studied womens' Internet use in pregnancy. She is passionate about developing evidence based midwifery practice and facilitating women in making informed choices. Briege was runner up of the Northern Ireland 2007 RCN Nurse Researcher of the Year award.
